Bronx Dental Implants Providers – East Tremont Dental
Dental implants, which replace missing teeth, are the most reliable and long-lasting reconstructive dental option. Crafted from high-quality materials, when placed with precision and care implants can help a patient chew, speak and smile comfortably for many years. Replacing missing teeth with implants can eliminate feelings of self-consciousness that some people feel when they have a noticeable gap in their teeth.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are prosthetics that are placed in a patient’s jaw bone to replace missing teeth roots. They are often used in patients who have severe tooth decay or gum disease, have experienced trauma to the mouth, or have lost a tooth. Our dentists may also recommend implants to some patients who have excessive wear and tear and may lose the affected teeth in the near future.
To be considered a Bronx dental implant candidate, you must have sufficient jaw bone to support the implant posts. The dentists will check for this prior to your implant treatment.
Dental Implant Placement Surgery
Placing dental implants is a multi-step process. First, the titanium post or screw of the implant is surgically placed in the jaw bone. It heals for a few months – usually between three and six months during a period of time called osseointegration. During osseointegration, the implant gradually anchors itself to the jaw bone. After it has healed, the implant post is topped with an artificial tooth (usually a porcelain crown). The crown screws onto the implant post with a piece called an abutment. The crown functions normally and the results look natural.
Benefits and Risks of Dental Implants
Implants can be used to anchor other dental prostheses, such as bridges, or a set of upper or lower dentures. Implant-fixed dentures are very secure and won’t slip around in the mouth. Implants are also beneficial for the jaw bone and maintaining the facial structure. Chewing normally on the implant keeps the jaw bone stimulated so that it does not deteriorate and cause further oral problems or the collapse of the facial structure. Implants will last for many years with proper care and dental hygiene.
Implant failure may occur if they are not properly cared for; brushing and flossing is imperative to the success of the implant. Smoking and not cleaning the implant and the surrounding teeth is risky for an implant patient.
Other Reconstructive Dentistry Options
Dental implants are not suitable for every patient. Patients with insufficient jaw bone or gum tissue may not be good candidates for dental implants and may need to consider other options, such as:
- porcelain crowns
- dental bridges
- partial or full dentures
Dental implants may be part of a full mouth reconstruction treatment plan to address multiple functional problems brought on by missing teeth.
