At East Tremont Dental, we realize that having missing teeth can make people feel self-conscious about their smile. Fortunately, our talented Bronx periodontist Dr. Sam Morhaim and our renowned dental expert Dr. Robert Steinberger are here to help. Whether you are in need of a single tooth implant or replacement of multiple teeth due to injury, decay, or gum disease, Dr. Steinberger and Dr. Morhaim can restore your full, beautiful smile. Dental implants are convenient, comfortable and long-lasting, so individuals can stop worrying about their dental imperfections and start smiling again.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is comprised of a prosthetic root that replaces an individual’s natural tooth root and serves as a foundation for a dental crown, dentures or a permanent tooth. Dr. Steinberger implants the synthetic tooth root into the patient’s jawbone. Over time, the jawbone slowly fuses to the dental implant. Dr. Steinberger then tops the dental implant with a permanent tooth, a crown, dentures or a dental bridge, so it looks and functions like natural teeth. With good care and maintenance, Bronx patients an expect dental implants to last a lifetime.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Bronx Dental Implant Patient at East Tremont Dental
During your first office visit, Dr. Steinberger customizes a dental treatment plan to meet your unique needs. The personally tailored treatment protocol may involve: replacing a single missing tooth with one dental implant and crown; replacing multiple missing teeth with multiple implants and one or more dental bridges; or replacing all teeth with full or partial dentures supported by dental implants.

On the day of your dental implant procedure, a local anesthetic will be administered prior to starting the implant process, so you do not feel anything and are completely comfortable throughout the entire procedure. The experienced Bronx dentist then surgically implants the prosthetic root into the jawbone.

If, for some reason, you do not have a sufficient mass of jawbone in the upper back area of your mouth to support dental implants, Bronx dentist, Dr. Steinberger may need to perform sinus augmentation before he can position the implants. Sinus augmentation involves raising the sinus floor to enhance bone mass, so there is an adequate amount of bone to support your implants properly.

If you have a jawbone abnormality that makes it difficult to support the implants, Dr. Steinberger may perform ridge augmentation. To do so, the general dentist gently lifts the gum off the jawbone ridge, exposing any bone deformities. He then fills any imperfections with either natural bone that has been grafted from another area or synthetic bone material. Once Dr. Steinberger has repaired the ridge, he can securely place the dental implants at our Bronx dental office.

Are There Disadvantages with Dental Implants?

With all oral surgery in the world of dentistry, there is always a risk of infection or prolonged discomfort. Dr. Steinberger will discuss how these risks can be avoided when undergoing dental implant surgery. We highly recommend patients to set a one on one consultation at our dental facility in the Bronx before committing to any oral surgery.

How to Care for Dental Implants at Home

Dr. Steinberger will provide you with thorough instructions about how to take care of your dental implants. Generally, however, you should treat your dental implants as you would your regular teeth: Continue to brush two times a day, floss once a day and rinse your mouth with antiseptic mouthwash. It is important that you keep all your dental appointments, including your annual dental exam and semi-annual cleanings, so Dr. Steinberger can monitor the health of your natural teeth and dental implants.
